Getting Started as a Writer Online: Step One
I’ve been a writer for a few websites for a few years.
Technically, I think it’s called something to the effect of ‘Online Content Producer’ or some nonsensical phrase like that (I really don’t like office speak, at all).
Truthfully- it’s awesome work- while far from the money maker that certain places will have you believe- it does pay the bills. Getting started however isn’t always too easy. It does involve the dreaded ‘W’ word that many people seem to hate- Work. *cue scary music*
It will be payless, or relatively so for a while eventually though that same work will pay off. You only need a few things, and it isn’t going to cost an arm and leg to get them either.
The two easiest (and most basic) things I have found to help a bit:
- Blog: Write quality content either subject specific or a range of subjects. There is some debate which is better, personally with my ‘main’ blog I write about a pretty large range of topics. That method has worked quite well for me, others may disagree.
- Get an account on a network: Personally, I love Associated Content and I tend to recommend it to people who are looking to get started in writing. You can earn some money through them, and it’s a good way to ‘practice’ and really get started on forming your thoughts better.
Don’t just apply to anything, first you really need to build up both content and your writing. It isn’t going to ‘just happen’ out of the blue. Even if you think your writing is good right now, there is still room to improve.
Generally, a test to see if you are ready is to write a 300–400 word piece on something.
If you were shocked at that number? You need to improve.
While there is no hard and fast rule to how much content you want to build up, there should be a fair amount. You also need to keep it updated at least three times a week or so (yes, ironic considering I don’t update this website all that often).
