Web Design Best Practices: The Geo-Cities Version

Awesome

Artist’s Rendition

Like many other web types, I got my start using Yahoo! Geo-Cities (now sadly, gone).  With geo-cities there were certain design rules that you had to follow.

Comic Sans Content was king there, it’s just that the content was 99% fan fiction.  Yet, since the unfortunate, sad, shutdown of Geo-Cities, the web hasn’t been the same.

Here are the skills and tips for those who design the Geo-Cities way (illustrated above):

  • Make sure that you only use the king of typefaces: Comic Sans
  • Center Everything
  • Do NOT use div, tables, anything. The only allowable use is the header.
  • Animated backgrounds are a much.  Sparkles are like hugs to your users.  Who doesn’t like hugs?
  • Misspellings are a-ok!  After all- you have a website.  You can’t be bothered to check everything.
  • Links must be random, half of which were accidental.
  • Text much either be all lowercase and h1 OR h6.  Or all caps, all the time.  It’s proving your passion for your fan fiction.
  • Never paginate.  Have everything on one page, if it takes someone a day and a half to scroll halfway down- you got it!

With this, you can take back your l33t skills and design like the cool kids*.

*Please, please for the love of god- don’t do that.
