My (Odd) Soapbox: What’s Yours?

Angry Blue Guy: If you see this in real life- seek help.

While I may be partial due to my love of surrealism, in looking back to all my years of art study- I have come across a ton of advice.  While logically there is no real reason for this one thing to really stand out, it does.

That advice?

Only draw what you see.

If all artists only drew what they saw, art would be rather boring wouldn’t it?

While for the person just starting out- it is good advice.  To learn the more complicated things, you need to have a good standing with the basics.  The best way to learn those basics? Drawing what you see.  It is logical and that’s not mentioning it’s fundamental position.

Yet, still- when that piece of wisdom is uttered around me- I still get a visceral twitch. There is no reason it should be my soapbox, yet – it is.

This got me wondering are there other people out there with that odd reaction to what most people consider ‘normal’ and everyday advice.

Do you have some sort of inexplicable soapbox?  What is it (no, it doesn’t have to be art related)?
